Well, I tried out an LED light bulb in my desk lamp for a bit but it wasn't working out - the light was too directional. I ended up mounting an LED pucklight in the unfinished ceiling above my desk. The light is now much more even and I've freed up some some room on my desk by getting rid of the lamp. The LED lightbulb has been recycled into my son's room as a nightlight.

If you like the lamp (other than the inefficient, hot halogen bulb) maybe you could retrofit an off the shelf LED "bulb" or DIY it Retro Fit a Desk Lamp with LEDs

FWIW,
Tim

I finally got around to finding a desk lamp. Since my cousins moved out, we moved our living room into the sunroom and there was no floor lamps in the room. This forced me to use the halogen lamp quite a bit more to my distaste. So, this weekend we took a trip to an Ikea store with my cousin and his wife. I found this lamp there and threw in a 7W CFL. I like the mechanical look of it, and it takes bulbs with an E12 base so it won't be hard to find bulbs for it.

On another note, they actually had CFLs with an E17 base there. That surprised me as I haven't ever seen them anywhere else, not even online. They were not energy star rated, but I did pick a couple up as I have one lamp that does use them. I tried it out last night, and for a 7W bulb, it was plenty of light.
