It's OK to over volt a motor, but only safe if you add forced cooling.

(I realize you know this - just posting for others who may not.)

That's how Paul manages to drive his VW Bug with such a small motor.

Yeah, that was going to be the next step if the 48V uprate didn't cool it down enough! Too bad it didn't last that long.

Well, I went all out again. I had been talking with one of the EV club guys and he suggested a very nice permanent magnet motor, the Mars ME0708. Its basically the next generation etek motor. Its even designed by the same guy.

Anyway, I found one on ebay today and nabbed it for a very good price (considering what they go for new). This new motor will have absolutely no problem handling the power output that the mower requires.

daox, if that motor doesn't work out please talk to me because i have 2 new ADVANCED DC MOTORS here.. it's runs @48 volt all the way up to 96 volts.. i will be using one for my tractor build..

Thanks for the offer! I am very sure this motor will work out though. Its rated for 6hp continuous and 15 peak. My last motor was only rated for 1.6hp, and it was putting out 4-5 constantly. The only draw back of this motor is the shaft is much shorter than my other motor, so getting two pulleys on it is going to be a trick. I might have to make a shaft extension for it.

On a side note, I've started to build a website for the mower. I just put up the basics as of right now. However, I hope to expand it into a helpful guide for those looking to convert a mower.

The new motor has arrived. Despite being packaged horribly. Tip to future motor shippers out there, DONT USE PEANUTS WHEN THE THING YOU'RE SENDING HAS TONS OF SLOTS IN IT (or put a bag around the part). *sigh*






So, the first thing I had to do was take it apart and vacuum it all out. I'm not sure I have it all. Probably tomorrow I'll be taking it to a friend's house and he is going to inspect the brushes for me. So, we'll have to take it apart then. We'll clean it out more if need be then.





Overall shot of the motor. As you can probably tell, this motor is a fair amount shorter than my first motor, but it is 1 inch wider.

I read that you can get an electric Ariens for much the same money that you have in your conversion, imo there is no comparison. Because you have built the conversion yourself, you are familiar with each component, and have a really good understanding of each part and its limitations, you sourced or built everything so repair and maintenance is going to be a snap (if required). I am pleased for you and please accept a virtual pat on the back.

I just ordered the pulleys for the motor. I'm still not sure if I can get away without an extension on the shaft or not, but I need the pulleys anyway. I'm hoping I can just modify the pulleys to make them fit. The stock Simplicity pulley didn't have a hub on the end. The setscrew just went between the V in the pulley. If I do this to both pulleys I can fit them both entirely on the shaft with about 1/16" to spare.

I also took my motor over to a friends house. This friend works for a spring and brush manufacturer. They are currently working with this motor to develop better brushes and springs to extend their life. He got me a free set of springs that he said will double my brush life. They haven't found a better brush for it, but when they have I'll probably pickup a set of those too.
