Combined heat and power. i.e. using a combustion engine for electric generation at home, and using the waste heat for domestic hot water.

Complicated doesn't need to be bad if the technology and design are well done. Modern furnances are complicated but widely used. Theory of CHP seems to offer better use of input energy.

Thanks for the link. I searched and nothing came up. New tech w/high cost maybe demand can lower price or it can be hacked to DIY.
