Solar-Augmented Power Production As Per EPRI
I think this is a great idea and really don't understand how it hasn't been as viable or cost effective in the past. Basically, most of our power plants these days run on steam. Why not preheat this water and/or convert it (on a good sunny day) to steam with solar?
This is very similar to what I am working towards with heating my house. I'll have solar hot water panels preheating the water. The water then goes to a boiler which will kick the temperature up (if needed) and then pump the water to my hydronically heated floors (most are yet to be installed). This drastically reduces the power needed to heat the water up from the cold ground water temperatures to the temperature needed to heat the house. I do realize that generators need much higher temperatures and at higher temperature solar collectors do loose efficiency. However, it still has to be beneficial to do this. Solar hot water is one of the most cost effective means of using solar energy (besides passive solar). Solar-Augmented Power Production As Per EPRI:Greentech Media
