For people interested in DIY geothermal
I've been looking into geothermal heat pump for a while and plan to do that after my solar adventure and the new roof goes on next year sometime. My plan at least at the moment is to buy a used geothermal unit ( there are some on eBay right now for less then 1000) now that's without the pump or any of the loop field. But I have plenty of yard (3 acres) and I plan to do a horizontal loop field. I have a mostly clay yard and plan to do 3-4 slinky loops on the back side of the house. They main purpose of these post tho was just to bring you all to the attention that maybe finding a used unit locally on Craigslist or on eBay and then do the rest yourself. That way you don't have to worry about all of the refrigeration tools and things like that..

Have you had any luck finding a used heat pump unit?

Yes and no. I was going to buy one when I found one but I'm going to wait. I've got to much going on right now.. Although I should have got the one that for sale locally for 500$ it was the right size although it was 10 years old

In fact, I picked up a few "trade ins" from my local HVAC guy as WaterFurnace had a "trade in your old heat pump program" for a hefty discount on a new one.

Yea I didn't not get it because it was old. It was more so the timing isn't right as it might be a year or 2 before that ever starts to be a reality for me. Just to many projects.
