Default windows 8.1

Does anyone know when upgrading to windows 8.1 from 8.0, do you loose what is already loaded on PC and need to reload other programs?
Thanks

It should be safe but it's always a good idea to backup your important data before any update.

No you don't. But yes back up.

And yes...windows 8 and 8.1 is garbage. I'm pretty sure you asked for my opinion on that.

There's a program you can add so windows 8 looks and behaves like windows 7 , thus rendering it useable.
I tried windows 8 back in the trial days of its release and had trouble working with it and finding specific folders and features.
I use windows 7 as its much like XP and Vista - simple !

Industry tends to skip releases like this. Windows 8 will go the way of Vista with a Windows 9 (or some other silly name) release.

I have a new Laptop to configure (replacing an old XP), I've read the reviews..
Amazon.com: ASUS D550MA-DS01 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black ): Computers & Accessories

Reading the 'advice', it seems I'll have to spend about a day updating the OS, before using the system..
I'll delivery it to my Sister-in-law in a couple of days.. I hope!

I've been using '7' on my new desktop PC, for a while now, and like it. It's like a faster version of XP..

I'm going to try to update my old XP PCs up with Linux mint-16- Mate.
I've been checking it out using a USB drive. So far, it looks promising.
But, it might turn out to be too complex for an old guy..
I'm not much of a IT guy.. I forget stuff too quickly..
