The heating season definitely isn't over yet, but I definitely have enough data to say that dropping my temperature down further at night and when away is undoubtedly saving me a fair amount, and it has virtually no negative side effect. Despite it being the coldest winter since owning the house, my gas use per heating degree day is still down lower than previous years.
For those who haven't already, go get a programmable thermostat!!!

It's looking better. But I'm still keeping the 11degF alarm on
It's not over until the oil man sings..
The end is near. I can tell, because the forecast is becoming less and less accurate. Last night was suppose to be down in the single digits again.. But, for some strange reason the arctic air didn't push all the way down to Beantown. Back-up heat Not required!! So, for the third time this month, I unplugged and put away the space heaters unused..

Just checked and my last bill was $166 (gas/electric)...that is down $12 from the previous bill. I can't wait to finish up insulating this place to see how much i can drop that in the future. I'll have to look at it, but heating *gas furnace* will have probably run me a solid $500 for the season.

Wow, the heating season started early for me this year. I've had the heat on for over a month now. Still running 70F while home, 50F when not. It fluctuates daily how much its off due to my wife's varying schedule.

Inside Temp - Portland, Oregon
The daily Heating Degree Days here (base 68F) are still pretty mild, as shown by this graph from the closest monitoring station that is 1 mi. away:
I do not heat my whole house, only the room(s) I am active in. And although I have improved the insulation in my kitchen, as I write this, I am only heating the living room to 68 degrees F (20 C). My little 9k mini-split is barely ticking over... hardly enough to keep my NO_MOVING_PARTS_TOWEL_DRYER going. [* EDIT: I just got a call from my hyper-horticultural girlfriend, alerting me to the certainty of hard freeze tonight and tomorrow, so my HDD chart is gonna look different pretty soon. *] Cheers from soggy (for now) Portland, OR -AC

I'm thinking 50-55f for a decently tight house. Do you run your heat when its 68f outdoors? I don't turn mine on until it's colder than 50f outdoors.
