Your son's car (in Red) reminds me of my old 91 Laser RS, when last seen.
I kinda wish that I had kept that old car..

That is the look he wants. His clear coat was badly peeling. It will be red again.
I wonder if your old cars clear cost is still holding up. That was some bad years for clear coats.

That pic date info is 2009:05:14 14:32:51 So it was almost 20 years old then. We used a garage until I sold it in 2000. I heard the paint job still looked good when it was re-sold a few years ago. I understand it's still on the road, down in Connecticut.

Glad to hear it is still on the road. Being garage kept makes a big difference for the paint holding up.

My sons car has spent its life in the SC sun no garage.

I think the 90's we more different looking to each other unlike today where they look more the same.

We have it sanded. We need to wet sand it one more time with 600 grit. It is getting very close to painting.
My son does not have that much time cross country running and AP classes but we are still getting there.
The local guy that was going to spray it for me doubled the price for painting it. I will not spend that much on the painting so I am going to paint it.

I have painted a 16’ boat but that was many years ago. I painted some door jams 20 some years ago.
I will be watching some Youtube painting videos

I am going to use a Paint, Single Stage, UV Stable, Acrylic Urethane, Gloss, Flame Red from Summit racing.

Is it below 70 degrees there? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up100/overview/
Or above? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-up101/overview/

YouTube is the best teaching machine ever!

It is still over 80 here.
Here is the order just under $200 shipped.

That is more reducer than I will need but I can use it to wipe the car down and with other paints.
I canceled the above reducer and changed it to the slow above 80 degrees.

Saw some Single Stage paint jobs on YT.. https://youtu.be/OILbcE4h9II
Some of the paint jobs look really nice!

The last time I was painting vehicles, was fire trucks in Bermuda 1963-65..
Also help paint B-Platoon's old MG Midget. I guess Fire-Engine Red was a standard color. But, I think we might have used dark Blue, for some reason..
Good Luck Buddy!

The car looks a lot different. It still needs color sanded 1500 grit then 2000 grit and buffed but it is the right color now.
We took out the plastic wheel well liners. I hate to see over spray on those. We also remover the door skins to take off the rubber around the lock cylinders.
My son is excited he really likes the color and is ready to get his car back on the road.

The picture is the Sunday morning then Sunday afternoon
All the masking took hours to do then in the afternoon it took 10 min to take it all off.

WOW! Looking good! Even at this stage, the hard work really shows!
Can't wait to see the finished product!
