I added my air manifold 5 days ago. The lettuce is getting air now. Here is a picture 5 days growth with the new air. Very pleased with the difference.
Top picture is today. I will add this photo it is 22 days growth. The new air is only on 5 of those days. I hope I am not boring you with all the lettuce pictures. I am really trying to get this lettuce thing worked out. My 1,000 worms were delivered. At least 1/2 of them are in the DWC. My nitrates are still doing really good. Todays 11/2/2016

I am happy with my test starting seeds in the foam cubes. I put three foam cubes in a plastic bag those all started. I put two directly in DWC those started. I put three rock wool cubes directly in DWC but only two of those started.
The lettuce seeds start quicker that other seeds but I have had some not start in the Rockwool. I am going to try starting other seed in the foam cubes. (The seeds are a little deeper in the foam cubes) I have my air pump hanging by string that sure quiets it down. It does not make much noise now this really helps. 1/3/2016

What changes do you have to make to things for the fall/winter months?

My auto vents are adjustable to what temps they open and close. During the summer I had them open as soon as they can and close as late as they can.
Last week I adjusted them to open at the warmest they can to help hold heat at night. Later I will disable some of them as they are not need as much in the winter. I need to put some more weather stripping on top vents a couple bottom vents. I took off the defused poly carb covering up the glass windows. I am thinking about making a solar water collector. I have some patio door glass. I would connect this to my closed loop water heating. This way I could vent the greenhouse more and still have a way to heat the fish water. Last winter I was still building so this is the first winter with the drums with water that had the summer to warm up. I do wonder if it will be any different than last winter. I now have 27 heads of lettuce planted I am planting a week apart. hopefully this will be a great winter crop. I will be starting other plants soon.

I bought a new PH meter. My old one was taking longer and longer to get a reading. I take PH reading each day I wanted to have something that was faster.
My old salinity meter on the right works great and was very stable. I like it a lot so I bought a PH meter made by the same company. So far this one seems better. It is more accurate not that I really need it to be. So far it is much faster. Here is my lettuce still growing I took my shop vacuum and put a small air line hose on it. I used this to suck out most of the fine solids. This worked out very well and I did not get rid of that much water. I will be putting in a new fine filter next week.

Always store your pH pen with electrode storage solution in the cap. Make sure it never dries out. Most pH pens have a 3M or 4M KCl reference solution inside the electrode. That's what the storage solution is: potassium chloride solution with some preservative. If you store it in anything else, the reference solution inside the electrode slowly diffuses out through the glass envelope. Once the reference solution is poisoned or weakens, the thing is done. Time for a new one.
It may be possible to rejuvenate your old pH pen if the electrode hasn't dried out. You simply pour some storage solution in a container deep enough to submerge the electrode, and leave it that way for a length of time. Overnight might work, but a few days would definitely do the trick if it can be done. I actually did this with an old Milwaukee pH pen. That one finally met its doom in my dog's mouth...she also has a taste for remote controls. |

Good info. My new PH meter has a small sponge in the storage tip. It states to put a PH 4 fluid in the sponge. So what you are saying makes perfect sense.
My new meter you can replace the sensor tip but it is not cheap to do so 3/4 cost meter. I ordered 2 cubic Ft K2 media for my new fine solid filter. I installed my new air stones in my DWC. I now have six air stones in the DWC and one in the fish tank. That’s it for the air in the DWC I am done with that project. Lettuce 11/9/2016

I bought a 32 gallon plastic garbage can to make my new filter out of.
Still need to make it. Lettuce 11/14/2016 Here is a picture with the ones started with foam and the ones started with rockwool. My rockwool is doing better. The roots went through the foam quickly but my system needs a fine filter. I am going to wait until after I have the filter setup to try the foam again. I have some foam coming from overseas to try also. Here are my crazy tomatoes. I have cleaned these out I need to trim these up.

The temp went down to 32F last night. Greenhouse did not go below 56F. The second row and the third row is 79F The bottom row of 55 gallon barrels are almost covered up with the DWC but they are still 73.7 F at top of the barrel. 11/21/2016 lettuce Today when I had lunch I went out and picked a tomato and some lettuce for my sandwich.
