Yesterday my oldest boy had a cross country meet out of state. But today we were able to build some.
I had my youngest son help in the morning and his older brother help in the afternoon. Then it took all three of us to stand up the wall. It is 16" on center and the wall is 9' high.
Completely built with reclaimed lumber. I am outsulating ( insulation on the out side of the wall ) so 2 x 4 are fine for the wall studs.

We built a work space out of pallets.

Zack my oldest son and I finished the back wall framing today. We put in some staggered blocking and two diagonal bracing in the inside wall that will stay there permanently. We installed the top plate. It is amazing how much stronger the wall feels now.

One step closer.

It was fun working with them. I mostly worked with them one on one. That way we could show them in detail what we were doing. They were using the air palm nailer. They learned how to remove old nails using the flat pry bar and the crow bar when to use the hammer. They now know how to layout a wall 16” center. They used the level more than I did.
I showed them how to do the math to know what length the next board we needed.

It was so much fun passing these skills on to them. They work hard and don’t complain at all. Another thing I am happy to pass on.

I thought we needed more help to get the big wall up but they talked me into just doing it with the three of us.

They were right we did it.

They were high fiving after we got it nailed up and supported.

A garden update. The serrano pepper is taking off. We are still getting tomatoes every day and the lettuce is finally growing. I need to plant more.

Yesterday I ordered my Polymatte Greenhouse polycarbonate 15 year warranty. This will go on the front ½ the roof and 6’ on each end on the front.

One sheet will go west wall to help keep the heat down.
I will use glass windows and doors on the east wall. You want as much as that morning sun to come in and warm things up on a cold winter night.

I hope I am happy with this stuff it was a big expense. But this will keep glass from being overhead and defuse the light for the plants.

The recovered 2 x 8 I got will now become back roof rafters 24” OC.

The ridge beam is going to be a double 2 x 10 supported every 12’. On the side wall it will have 4 2 x 6 sandwiched together holding it up. In the center it will have a 4 x 6 to a cement footing.

The front rafters will be 2 x 6 24” OC.

The front wall will be 2 x 6 35” OC 8' tall with blocking at 20” high. This allow the patio doors to be mounted the outside of the studs. The vents will be 18" high on the bottom on the wall. This wall will be @ 70 degree angle.
It will look similar to this.

Its has been hard work but I still think the boys are enjoying it.

My head is spinning with the calculations for the rafter length and where to put the ridge beam.

My back wall is 9’ high with a 6” over hang
The ridge beam will be 12’ high.
The front wall 8’ high at a 70 degree angle
The front roof rafter needs to be 8’ no overhang.
I need to just adjust the center of ridge beam to make that work.

There are online calculators but you can’t put in for the 70 degree wall.
I guess because normal walls a 90 deg.

My dad thought he got a bunch of jalapeno pepper plants from the school greenhouse. Now that they're blooming, it is obvious he got bell peppers. Surprise!

Another building weekend for boys and me.
We have the two more walls up.

It is so nice to see the lumber pile get smaller and the greenhouse get bigger.

I have built everything so far out of reclaimed lumber.
I did buy some lumber this weekend for the front wall and the ridge beam.

Lowes had Sherwin-Williams paint that is normally 33.98 a gallon or 124 oz for ½ off. It was a one day only sale.

I bought six gallons I bought on line and picked up in store. They had 39 gallons and all sold by the afternoon.
