The crankcase heater is probably triac-controlled so even that won't be a linear load.

It might even be using DC with PWM.. Or a relay.
The Elite unit was only £47.74 GBP. It will be winging it's way across the Atlantic soon.. |

I think it would use a triac because it's the cheapest way to get variable power.

At that low power level, a triac is actually cheaper than a relay.
