The crown series has a two stage compressor I wonder how much weight that adds.

I wanted to bring it into the living room. But that area is off-limits until Sunday. The remote has some good stuff on it. Programmable timer looks really neat. IIRC, you can program the temperature for sleeping, and set what temp you want, eight times, for all eight hours of sleep.. I read about the app in the manual, and it requires you to go into your wifi setup and select the Gree's wifi port. The only thing I saw 'extra' was a eco performance or power saver mode. It works by not just looking at the indoor temp, but also the outdoor temp.. Maybe when outdoors is warming up, it doesn't try to heat indoors as much? That's something I would like to try.. I didn't read everything. I'm sure the app has changed during the last year.. I think the name of the app is different now. I have not downloaded it yet.

They say it's extra heavy duty.. I guess it has thicker sheet metal..?. The Gree install manual isn't nearly as well done as the old Sanyo manual.. It seems more like a brochure, than a working document. This manual is for the Crown 9k, 12k & 18k. And all the IDUs are the same size.. So, this is disappointing, this drawing must be for another family of IDU..?. They need to have an accurate drawing of where to drill the hole.. LOL! I'm going to try to use the existing hole.. Wish me luck! One big negative on this IDU is the very short condensate tube! It ends inside the IDU! To save 15 cents?? The manual says you may have to use an adapter. The end of their tube is a soft plastic cone shape. (I think clamping with tie, will crush it, causing a leak risk). Where do we get that type of adapter? At the duct tape store? I foresee this short drain hose as a problem for installers.. A water inside the cover, isn't going to be any fun at all. Since the hose comes from the left side, I'm tempted to drill a 1" hole in the wall over there! Those two mounting studs in the lower-left, is the location of the wire strain relief (you supply clamp). So the wire must be installed inside in house (like the drain hose), then pushed out the hole, before lifting the unit onto the bracket. 2-man job. That short copper pipe looks like it might be for converting from a 5/8" port, down to a 1/2" lineset, that's used by the 9k & 12k Crown.. The little pipe was in the box with the IDU. And it has me wondering if, the all three IDUs (9,12 & 18k) use the exact same indoor unit? Wouldn't that be amazing.. Just different labels and maybe a byte in the firmware? Another theory is, that pipe is used on the ODU, which all have the same size ports as the 18k..?. I checked my new line-set (non-OEM) and it seems to be 5/8" & 1/4".. I think located the wifi board, with it's little control server.. I'm wondering if it's the entire brains of the IDU, or just an add-on for wifi?

Not surprised the condensate drain line ends inside the IDU. Some of the GREE installs I saw in China had issues with condensate drainage, and dripping condensate from the IDU (more like raining actually). Considering some of the other "short cuts" I saw the A/C installers make, I wasn't surprised a few units had condensate drain leaks.
The remote looks a bit updated from the remotes they were using in 2014. It will be interesting to hear whether you can control it from outside your home network. |

Home network?? Not sure that's possible..
The info that I've seen so far, seems to indicate you have to find the Gree SSID and connect to it.
Just like you would connect to any hotspot server.. Your phone becomes a wifi remote..?. I'll see what's possible. I have the Wifi Smart app installed on my favorite tiny tablet.. Did they have a Wifi button on their remote in 2014?? Did some heavy lifting just before the wind kicked up.. Hurricane must still be off the coast. We might get some rain too.. I've decided to permanently bond the the condensate drain hose sections together, inside the IDU.. Plastic Bonder Syringe | J-B Weld In case the water pressure gets up near 3770 PSI..

Not as I recall. They were strictly IR in 2014. Some of my coworkers cloned the IR codes for the functions they needed onto their smart phones to control the A/Cs when remotes were not present in the rooms the A/Cs served. I also recall the remote buttons being purely Chinese characters, which made life interesting, since I don't read simplified Chinese nor do I speak it.

Keen on hearing about the everyday performance of this U-Crown .
Here below a test (made by Gree) for 18 BTU applied in Europe (see: QXAT-B121 compressor instead of B20 for US/CAN): http://www.airtradecentre.bg/PDF/new...DNA4F--ERP.pdf => indicating bad on/off cycling- behaviour at relatively low output capacity (around 1000W) Note: only capillary control after "intercooler/flash vaporizer) U-Crown 12UB (under brand C&H) tested also in Scandinavia 6/2016 vs. Daikin+Panasonic R32-versions.Some appetizers attached . Note: The testing upto -15degC controlled by inverters (against burden 2000/3500W) and further upto -30degC at full speed In all data defrost included !!!!!!!!!!!!! Result: U-Crown 12UB has a "lousy heating performance" (COP) at mild ambient conditions due to frequent on/off- cycling tendency |

Off-and-On running is sometimes caused by a room size problem. My Sanyo 24k seems to be able to deal with being over-sized, by running at <=500w and then going into idle mode, when it senses it's going to be too warm..
I've seen some ads for the U-model selling in Canada.. And I wondered why it wasn't for sale in the USA.. I guess it's because the weather is so much colder up north.?. The 18k ODU (U-Crown) in the test doc, seems to have a different case than mine.. (see pic). Assuming the fan is the same size, the case is smaller.. The test is about 2 years old, and my system was made about 1 year ago.. So it might be an improved version.. I hope!

Mounting indoor unit
Had a little problem with the mounting rack. It was a lot smaller than expected.
Once I lined up with the existing Line-Set hole, there was only one stud under the rack. It was in the center. The main support for the IDU are the tabs on each end of the rack. So, I had to add extensions on both ends of the rack.. The add-on sheet metal is mounted into studs and attached to the rack. So the rack should never bend forward or slide downwards. Other bugs: The labeling of the wiring terminals in the IDU is different than the manual. The manual is missing steps numbers 1 to 6 of the Vacuum Procedure. I found the missing steps in the on-line install manual (PDF). Tomorrow, we plan to get out early and run the line-set and start the pressure test.

It has a nice looking profile. It looks thinner than mine.
