Pool heatpump modification? EDITED
I have two hayward pool HP model HP50A with crack heat exchanger that are very expensive to replace.
I would like to start a small project to see how those heat pump can be used to heat my house and hot water. I saw project with small AC unit and dehumidifier but never saw any project with thos pool heat pump and i wonder why? The unit is selft contained and have all sensor for liquid systeme. inlet temp sensor outlet temp sensor flow switch The control panel is a simple 3 wire module and just by playing with the flow switch signal it would be possible to start and stop the unit and have a set temp for the glicol solution circulating in the unit. The part i dont like is that it use R410a that is liquid and gas and seem more complicated to work with. One option i see is to get two service valce installed on it so i can use the unit compressor to pump all the refrigerant inside the unit and close it and this would allow me to try diffeent heat exchanger with out the need for a recovery machine or tank. I would be able to do it with a vacumm pump and manifold/gauges. It is rated at 50 000 btu how can i know the size of the plate heat exchanger i need with it ? There are heat pump pool heaters, so what you are trying to do makes sense and is a better idea than heating electrically using resistance heat. There was someone here who modified a window unit to heat either a small pool or hot tub(fairly crude setup designed to be used while it was not occupied).

Sorry i was not clear, i have a pool heat pump already with a defective heat exchanger that is leaking water.. i wonder if it can be modified to heat water with a plate exchanger to heat a radiant floor? The unit is self contained and have a 3 wires control board and all temp sensor flow switch are inside the unit.
But one this i find hard to work with is the r410r it look to need more advanced equipment then other gas. I wonder is i can pay someone yo install two port on it and then i can use the unit compressor to empty lines like you can do with mini split and this would allow me to use different heat exchanger without recovering all r410a every times. I never saw a post about using those pool heat pump in any project here. |

If i get some one to install service valve i can avoid the need to recover and work on it with only vac pump and mamifold set.

What kind of heat exchanger do you imagine to replace the broken one with? It's contained inside the unit? If the unit has an electronic control and you fiddle with the guts, it will rebel, and you'll be fighting error codes and self destruct sequences and shutdowns and "stuff". Can you please shoot some pictures and post them in this discussion thread? The more details you provide, the better your responses will be.
This isn't the kind of unit that lends itself to a "cheap hobby project". 50kbtu is enough to heat a fairly decent sized home. 4 tons of capacity in HVAC terminology. The r410a is the least of your worries. It's legal to purchase without an EPA license, but again not cheap. |

I don't know if I would try to repurpose something like that.
The heat rejection side is likely engineered around a lower temperature heat rejection. The heat rejection side is probably intended to run well under 100F. To make an effective in floor heat system you would probably want to run 120 to 140F. The heat pump may not be able to move heat very well with that high of a temperature differential. I use a little 6,000btu heat pump for my hot water and it was designed to deal with high differential temperatures. |

I will take some pictures tonigh of the controller and al other parts.
I dont understand the heat rejection you talk about but i used it up to 90f and when you set it up you have to set it so there is a 2 deg diff in and out but its at a very high flow i dont know if you lower the flow if it will have error or what is the max diff in and out. |

The main pcb look very generic and can be replaced with anything else easy. acording to spec it can controll up to 210F.
I would like to learn with this machine. It is build to heat water and i want to heat water with it for my hot water need or to heat a room in my house. i was thinkin about installing two service valve so i can try different heat exchange on it with less work. I have read lots of post on this forum but dont understand yet what can make it possible or not. |
