The unit looks straight up like a gree on the outside. It would be good as the heater box if you didn't mind the noise. Since the cap tube is in the box, all that would be needed is a lineset and evaporator coil with fan. Or you could just reverse the suction and discharge lines on the compressor and turn the unit into a cooler box. Then a direct water heating coil could be submerged in the tank as Memphis has done.
From previous encounters, I have found it is easy to assume control of these non-inverter, cap tube metered units. The control circuitry is not much different than a dehumidification unit or window ac unit. All the heavy lifting devices are in the box. An average thermostat can do the thinking and tell the box what to do. Some skill is required to figure out where to connect to inside the box, tracking down control signals and such.
