I think it would be even more useful if the sensor itself was unburied and available to fasten to a part or surface to be measured.

I'll bet that "NTC thermal resistor" is mounted up in the air off the PCB,
near some air holes in the plastic case..
And anyone with E-hacker skills could install a little socket, so the NTC resistor could be relocated out into the world..

If it's a typical NTC, longer wire resistance won't mean much error, if any..
