Help me, Please
Good Morning,
I am an auto/truck mechanic by trade and a home repairer by necessity. I am the electric Nazi in my house and have no clue where to begin any repair project. This leads to the inevitable situation of having something totally FUBAR before I attempt the fix. Be gentle with me. Thanx, Schultz

Welcome Schultz.
How large is your house (sq/ft) and what kind of energy useage (gas and electric) do you use each month? As with cars, you must use data to figure out where you are and where you can go from there. As with any efficiency project, you need to first identify areas that are inefficient and find ways to make them efficient. Finding areas of air leakage (check windows, attic access, doors, power outlets and switches, etc.) or poorly insulated areas (attic especially) is a good place to start. Installing CFLs (compact flourescent lights) is another great place to start as lighting can be a huge part of your electric bill (30%). After you think you've buttoned up the house, you can start looking at how you can heat/cool/power it more efficiently. Conservation is always the first step (kinda like ecodriving first before grill blocking etc.)
