How I upgraded our entrance door with vacuum insulation
For those of you interested in upgrading a door, here's an article I wrote a few years ago. It's about adding 2cm vacuum insulation to an entrance door. The 2 cm vacuum insulation is identical to approx. 12 cm Rockwool.
The article is including infrared images (before and after upgrading). It's in Dutch, but Google Translate can help... Since I cannot post links yet, I try it this way: http://www.olino.org/articles/2013/0...ok-voor-warmte Last edited by Daox; 09-16-14 at 11:25 AM.. |

Excellent post...
HERE'S_THE_TRANSLATED_LINK The vacuum panel insulation works out to R-21.3/inch in US terms... very impressive! Best, -AC

The cost is significant and makes foam seem cheap by comparison. You can search for vacuum insulated panels and information goes back and is dated over a decade ago. Price is one strong reason why we might build a wall out a foot or more and fill it with cellulose in Passive House(or near passive) construction versus using a more compact form such as VIPs, rigid foam, or spray foam. Environmental factors are another in the case of foam but often the focus is on cost in both retrofits and new construction, especially when you can compensate for the use of space(such as building outwards). |

I am thinking they have room for improvements in manufacturing as the costs are astronomical , at least for the small orders, I had read the price per sq. is lower on the Big orders.
Stocks in this Company might be a good Investment. I found a Gov. of Canada website that is encouraging its use in commercial applications. It appears to have a long enough useful life , according to this article. .................................................. .................................................. ........
