You say you are using mulch as a growing medium, have you sized your rafters for the wet weight? Mulch gets remarkably heavy when waterlogged. Looks like a very interesting project, I would love to see how it grows and holds out over a winter.

They are indeed bat houses. I posted about them here:

The cut out corner is to allow light through to the honeysuckle climbing the bat house tower.
The weight of wet mulch doesn't concern me near as much as the 3' of wet snow that's likely to be there a few months from now :-0 I'm crossing my fingers.
And the green roof was an afterthought. I'd originally planned to roof with steel but now that we're beekeepers it's all about the bees so plants it is.
