Yes free is key! In central Minnesota we have a large variety of rock types to collect(glacier area) and many old farms grew as many rocks as crops so years of rocks removed from fields where piled in untillable areas. Framers had no problem with giving them away free(now landscape companies buy them as rocks are getting scarcer as with most things). We have relocated nearly two thousand basket ball to beach ball size(as large as I can lift) choice feature rocks to our perennial gardens over 25 yrs before demand has risen. Many have been carved with diamond blade saws for effect and stacked and pinned together into cairns and sculptures. When gardens are in full summer growth only about 25% of them are fully visible put in winter with light snow and spring they are as pretty to see as plants in summer. Especially on rainy days when rocks are wet looking polished.
