I think the advantage is that there's less surface trenching needed than with lots of boreholes spread around your garden - you can usefully drill several shallow angled boreholes from one location, then plumb them together in an access pit. If you have a big drill, I think I'm right in saying one big borehole is better, but that drill rig will be more expensive. A pro install I think always drills one or two very deep holes, but I expect costs more.

I did consider for some time having multiple 5m-10m deep boreholes, connected together as "AC Hacker" did - he has a great thread on it, which was my inspiration! I used a trencher for our diy gshp to avoid so much manual labour - lots of details on another thread.
