the geospring is a hybrid unit. When it goes into "recovery" mode, the compressor shuts down and the sand hog elements take over. During this time, you burn lots of electricity to try to keep the tank hot. Once the water warms up, it goes back into "energy star" mode. So the time it saves you the most energy is while you're not using hot water (a lot of the time), or when you take a 3 minute shower (habits determine) or wash dishes.

By the way, there is no way to force the unit to switch modes, it's too smart. You just set the tstat and away it goes.
