It has a pressure controller. Whenever the water pressure drops below a set level it turns on. If I have a leaky garden tap or toilet seal I can occassionally hear the pump cycling a few times a night but mostly it just sits there waiting for me to flush the toilet. The pump is a CH2-30 PC and is a nice piece of kit.

Apologies - I just realised that the blog post I linked to pre-dated our rainwater tanks so in the blog text I was talking about wishing it was using rain water. 6 months later and I had the tanks in and the supply connected over.
