Wow, that's really cool. It looks like they're illustrating an easily portable device that can fill a shot glass with drinking water, and my first thought was, can you scale it up to supply water to an entire community?

Yes, and the technology has already been deployed in some locations:



The output of solar desalination is distilled water, which is safe to drink whether the source water is brackish, contaminated with heavy metals, or has cholera.

Here's a brochure for a product that claims to produce 100kg of drinking water a day (in the tropics) with a $640 device:
