I too am getting ready to do major surgery on our electric garden tractor.
Converted it about 10 years ago to a series wound 24 Volt 2.5hp motor with 4 T105 golf cart batts. The second set of golf cart batteries have had the biscuit as has the big ol' motor.
Going to pick up a used Leaf battery and build an 80 volt battery using a pwm for speed control on a 2 - 4 hp treadmill motor, which I salvaged.
Am nervous about ripping into the much needed tractor but to replace the motor and batteries would cost about $2,000 I can get a leaf battery for $600 and a pwm for under $100, will only need a motor pulley and a new belt.
Am finding unwanted treadmills to be a mini gold mine of salveagable parts, the first on I got I turned into a monster bench sander with 118" by 20" belts, sands like a son of a gun and you cannot stall it no matter how hard you try.
