There are lots of alternatives, some vary based on where you live, but none of them look or handle like grass.

Many look like weeds, and/or flower; ie doesn't look like grass.
Many are aggressive / invasive, so your neighbor may not appreciate it and/or it may invade your other spaces. Both attributes which make it hardy.
Maintenance can get tricky, as a standard weed and feed product may actually kill it. Anything not susceptible is obviously hard to control.

Many types of clover, often used in shady areas or around walking paths are common.
