Good point about distracting listeners from actual problems...
Because Global Warming is an actual problem, and all of the pathetically ill-informed ranting to oppose legitimate scientific findings truly is, as you put it, the
real Red Herrings.
Burt Rutan, who wrote the dreadful paper you wanted everyone to take seriously, has a very good reputation for building unusual airplanes, so he can merit attention when he speaks foolishly about a topic he is very ill informed on. So his reputation allows him to contaminate large areas of public understanding.
The problem you have, in propagating mis-information, is that you have no credible reputation upon which to mount your dis-information... so you are only able to contaminate square centimeters, rather than very large areas of understanding.
I'd say it is a waste of an otherwise perfectly good retirement... the Long Night is not so far away.
