Where I live it's usually holes, but not always. Maybe 85% of the time. Just a guess. Apparently the cost of digging a trench deep enough rivals paying a well driller. It gets cold here so trenches...

People are doing that here but it only seems to work until the middle of the summer. After that the ground temp has risen to where it's no longer effective.

Pachai, I certainly have no data to back this up but I imagine that immersing the evaporator and the condenser in barrels and circulating the barrel water would turn out to be much less efficient...

BBTW, new thermostats are designed for heat pumps. Might want to sink the $15 to get one. They can control many aspects of heat pumps. Including backup heat.
