No, very easy removal. The sense tube is an intergal part of the thermostat. It has a glan nut on it that seals in the header that also seals the evaporator tubing into the tank.

Sure, why not? By design a plate type would be difficult to make without 4 to 500 psi working pressure. If one would fail, the leak would be to the outside, not across the plate.
