My outdoor sensor averaged around 7F this morning for a few hours.

The local Underground weather station (1/2 mile from here) showed colder..
Today's Extremes
High Temperature 14.8°F 1:10pm...

Hooked up the voltmeter to the signal output and found there wasn't very
much interference from hazy sunlight directly on the sensor.

But, it's a good example of an emitter-detector open-gap sensor.

Optical detector 'optical frost sensor'?

For my systems, I would need a detector to work down to -15 C, so measuring temperatures to detect ice would be difficult.

But seeing ice isn't hard at all. :)
