You don't have to put in 300 V DC to trace the circuit. Just use a 9 V battery as a signal source. That will tell you where the 300 V DC goes on the board. Once you know that, you can...

Thinking after the fact, would a whole house surge suppressor have been of help to prevent this? Not guilting , but am interested in one of these...
