A Prius inverter is about $100 or just above and will get you two 3 phase inverters to work with. Just replace the control board with some STM32s to turn it into a VFD....

I suggest asking EEVblog. It looks like a JST SH but it's important to examine the connector carefully since I have seen variants with subtle differences specifically to prevent cross connections.

That's a pretty high estimate considering the panels themselves are commonly available for well under $1/W in bulk. (In fact, $1/W isn't even a special deal for a single panel nowadays.)
