IMO insulation is like fun and money, you can never have too much. The lid in my house is R70, we have no attic, but the snow does not melt unless the ambient temp is above freezing.

Thanks AC, had not thought of the heat transfer. Sand was suggested by a fellow from Alberta, where it gets really cold, his opinion was that the sand allowed some movement in the Pex as it heated...
