I ordered an ebike. Now time to mod it.

My new bike folds up so I can put it in my Chevy Volt.
I will remove the fenders and the back rack.

It folds in the middle and handle bars fold.
It has hydraulic brakes and 5 modes of pedal assist.
750 watt hub motor
48V/10.4AH Samsung lithium battery
They say "Brushless motor can produce speeds up to 30 MPH in just 10 seconds." We will see if this is true. (This is not true about 24 MPH)

I did not get the color I wanted I may powder coat it.

Looks fun. How much and how long until you get it?

It was expensive but I thought I needed shocks and I wanted hydraulic brakes.
It would not be good to have a bike that hurts my back that I can’t ride. 750-watt motor adds to the price.

It was $1,449 shipped with a $50 coupon code.
https://www.eahoraebike.com/
I get it later today hopefully it has traveled well.

This one is $899 and it gets good reviews.
https://lectricebikes.com/collection...er-for-october

I really liked the SONDORS FOLD XS
I just could not spend that much. $1699
https://sondors.com/

It got here in good shape. But it was dark I will try it out tomorrow.

Wanna Beco 09-27-20 07:08 PM

That's cool looking and good specs. I would like an Onyx RCR , but they are very pricey. It seems like you have to spend 1500 to get a bike that is useable. I think you did good.

pinballlooking 09-27-20 11:01 PM

Thanks. I thought I could get one for 1K but after researching what features I wanted that was not going to happen.
I really like the hydraulic brakes. The regen would only be useful if you have big hills. It could be used like a brake like down shifting manual car.
It really slows you down just like the regen on my Chevy Volt.

Onyx RCR That thing looks sweet... But the are proud of it $$$

I rode today it was fun I have been trying to ride faster and pedal more.

Wanna Beco 09-27-20 11:12 PM

Yeh the onyx will do 60 MPH. That is crazy. I have been looking at the rad runners and juiced bikes. Like the super 73 line, but overpriced for what you get... other than the coolest looking bikes. Keep us updated on your real world impressions!

pinballlooking 09-28-20 11:03 AM

The controller right now in pedal assist tops out at 6 amps. But the bike tops out 19-21 amps.

If you want to ride fast and still have pedal assist it would really work very well. They say this is for safety reasons. But it is not how I want to use the bike at all.

I want to ride 20-25… and have pedal assist help me in the endeavor.

They have an upgraded controller that will allow me to ride the way I want to ride. I have been working with support to get the new controller.

They have agreed to send it to me if I pay shipping. $25 one week or $7 three weeks. I do not want to wait 3 weeks so I am going with the $25.

Under features they had the display manual a color display and pointed out that I got the wrong display and they quickly took down the color display manual they had under features. I am trying to get them to send me the color display but I am not sure if they will honor what they had listed on their web site.

We have been back and forth a few times. Every email takes one day to get a reply and if there is a weekend 48 hours.

I still like the bike just a couple things to get worked out.

pinballlooking 09-29-20 08:18 AM

They have made everything right. They said the will send me the color display. It is just not color that makes the difference.

I shows % of battery this is big the other one just has like 5 bars.

The display has more adjustments. I am looking forward to getting it and adjusting it to how I want to ride.

I have the new controller on order it is coming from China but I paid for faster shipping. It will still take 7-10 days.

Things to look for when buying.

Front shocks some have them some don’t you decide.

Back shocks a few have them.
Battery size and location does it lock?

Brakes most are disk but some are mechanical and will need more adjustments some are hydraulic. These bikes are heave mine is about 60 pounds mine are hydraulic brakes and they are excellent.

Do you want fat tires? They can be ridden on sand at the beach big plus they are more
forgiving on bumps but just a choice.

If you can get a bafang electric motor do it this is a better motor. The good thing is it is a direct replacement at some point I may upgrade to one.

Do you like to tinker and upgrade? There many things you can change to improve your bike.

Daox 09-29-20 08:27 AM

Its always great to hear companies doing the right thing and supporting their customers. Thanks for sharing your process!

pinballlooking 09-29-20 08:46 AM

I was happy, I have heard bad things about support with some of these companies. I was just polite nice and plead my case.
My wife said I would get no where with them.

While researching eBikes I was surprised at how many people were replacing their cars with eBikes.

One guy in Atlanta Georgia was using bike power to get to work so he was not all sweaty at work.

Then he mostly pedaled home. He shaved about 1 hour off his travel time by staying out of traffic.
This seems like a great use of a eBike.

pinballlooking 10-02-20 06:48 PM

I have 54 miles on my bike. I have been riding each day. Usually moving right along 20-25 MPH.
Mt average was 19.6 today for 8 miles. Still working out a couple things used the cruise control today.
I like the the Cruise control. My new controller is in Hong Kong stalled out some holiday.
I was able to get into change wheel size and set top speed to 31 MPH this did help.

Tomorrow I will try setting the wheels to be very small to trick the computer to give me more assist at higher speeds.

I have a new charger coming that can charge the battery to either 80% 90% or 100%
If you keep the battery between 20% - 80% then every 4 or 5 charges 100% to get balancing it can double the battery life. The batteries are expensive I have not been ridding long rides so 80% is no big deal.

The new charger does 1-5 amps so this also gives more options. It shuts off when charged. All good things.

If I go on long ride I will just charge 100%

PAS (pedal assist) only goes to 6amps going up hills or any other time. Someone told me about a mod that you can cut the PAS sensor wire and put switch on that wire.
That way you can use the full 19 amps throttle while pedaling up hills.
There are a red black and a green wire just cut the green wire and solder in a switch. Switch off throttle will work while pedaling.
Switch on it just works normal.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1601776773

Cadence Sensor seen here there are 12 magnets in it. It tells the ECU the you are pedaling. It is on the left crank.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1601777235

The difference is amazing.
The new controller I have coming should help this issue but it will probably be a week before it gets here.

I know it did not take me very long to mod my new bike.

If someone has this bike and wants to try this.
You just cut the green wire from the Cadence Sensor. Just follow the wires up from the Cadence Sensor. Look at the picture I put a line through the green wire.

The mod to the bike is working out great. Today was my best work out.
My morning ride is usually about 7.5 miles. Increasing pedaling each time.
I put it max speed cruise control and add in pedaling.
I now have 83 miles on the eBike.
My new charger and controller came in.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1602009494

It is so much more fun with this mod. The new controller should also fix the issue. But I hope I don't lose cruise control.

Daox 10-07-20 12:58 PM

Haha, the modding didn't take long at all. But, I think that is just the way we do things around here. I remember modding my Prius the second day I had it... :)

pinballlooking 10-07-20 01:10 PM

When I was shopping for a eBike I could get a 7 speed or a 8 speed. I bought a 8 speed but I did not put that item very high on the list of must haves.

Now that I have had it and rode 104 miles I would put that very high on the list to have. That top gear is a must if you want to go fast.
Otherwise you are just a hamster doing nothing at all that 8 th gear is a must. I saw others bought a 7 speed they all have swapped out gear cassettes to have that 8 th gear.

Here is the controller. The mosfet's look like their 70 volt 80 amps from the datasheet. They should be able to handle more amps than stock.
The stock controller is a 18 amp controller.

There is a shunt resistor that limits R003 the amps.
If I replace it with a R002 it should give a nice boost power going up hills.

I also ordered a R005 to put in parallel that will take the finial value to .001875 This will give just a little more amps and be a simple to just solder it on top of the other one.

There are lots of people doing this type of mod out there.
Here is a good example.

http://www.bergerweb.net/xb500/shuntmod.shtml

This mod will not really increase top speed but should give more torque.
To increase top speed I need more voltage or a better motor.
I want more torque for hill climbing.

I have new shunt resistors on the way.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1603206024

I just bought this I need to know how many amps I am using now.
Then measure it after I do the mod.

I bought two different values I will try the parallel mod first this one will give the most amps. Then I will test it to make sure I did not push it to hard. There is not a big difference between the two.
.001875 or .002 ohms

I went for a ride on the swamp rabbit trail today. I parked at the Zoo they have free EV charging.
This was my first slow ride. I went 12 miles and adv 12 MPH I had 97% battery left.

Speed really matters. In the morning I want for a 7.3 mile ride adv speed 21 MPH Max speed 27.5 and used 40% of the battery.

I have been using it more than I thought I would. It is just fun to ride and I enjoy riding a lot more than I thought I would.

I soldered two pieces of copper across the mosfets. I am not really sure how much that will help but people that did the mod claimed it helps.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1603641075

I went over a bunch of the solder joints and added a small amount of solder. I do believe this will help as some of the joints looked very questionable.

I added a resistor in parallel this should increase the current flow AMPS. (Shunt Mod)
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1603641075

I had to order an adapter for my measuring device. I need to find out the amp draw now then install the moded controller and measure the amp draw to know how much I increased it.

New back shock, tires, Derailleur Hanger, HG51 8-Speed Cassette, ring gear 54T.
The shock that the bike came with was designed for 330 pound person.

New shock is air adjustable for your weight.

New tires are more for road not trails.

Derailleur Hanger makes it shift better. Old one was not stiff enough.

HG51 8-Speed Cassette, ring gear 54T. This makes you be able to pedal at higher speeds.
54T has two more teeth for more top end.

New Cassette has a better gear for higher speed.

Now I can use the top 3 gears more before I was mostly using just the top gear.

Daox 11-06-20 02:41 PM

Sounds like a lot of new parts! How much nicer is it now?

pinballlooking 11-06-20 02:50 PM

The old back shock made for a 330 pound person did not have any give at all.
That was a must change for me.

I have 280 miles on it now. The changes really help make it to ride and pedal the way I want it to.
I enjoy it better now and it performs better.

If someone buys this bike would you need these changes. I would say no a lot people just ride them.
A handful of us change them to work the way you want it to work.

I am pleased with the changes so far and would do them again.

Next up is to add my power meter then the moded controller to see how big of change it makes.

pinballlooking 11-23-20 11:37 AM

My Xmas parts.

Bafang 750 watt motor. I will replace just the internals of the motor.
35 amp controller new throttle with the right wiring to go to the new controller.

New PAS (pedal assist sensor) sensor to go to the new controller.

New display that the controller requires. I liked my old display but it will not work with the new controller.

370 miles so far.

Daox 11-25-20 10:58 AM

This thing is going to be a full out motorcycle in a few months. :D

pinballlooking 11-25-20 11:17 AM

I am about done making changes after these changes.
I might still powder coat it later this winter.

pinballlooking 12-01-20 08:50 AM

I needed special water proof connectors for my brakes the cut off the motor when you hit the brakes.
The place I bought the controller wanted $20 a set and I need two of them.

I found a guy on ebay that was selling them for $5 much better.
I have a plastic box for the controller coming it is the last item. They created a shipping label a week ago but have net shipped it.
It is only coming on state away they assure me they will send it. The company is in China.

I may have to make one. I could easily make one but the side business is taking a lot of my extra time.

pinballlooking 12-23-20 02:58 PM

I now have 450 miles on my eBike. The new mods will probably wait until after the new year.
I will get to take the bike to the beach over the holidays. I am looking forward to new places to ride.

Daox 12-24-20 09:57 AM

Wow, thats quite good. Do you have an idea of the kwh/mile you get vs the Volt?

Wanna Beco 12-24-20 10:20 AM

Wait... why are you replacing the Motor.?.. I know Bafang has a good rep, but this seems like you are spending your way to a bike that you could have just paid more for and got what you wanted? Or did you need to experiment?

I am a heavy guy and the shocks made for someone heavy is a good idea. Looking forward to more updates.

The ebike differs in power used so much. Hills make a huge difference. How much you pedal makes so much difference.

@Wanna Beco

Before I bought the ebike I never even worked on a regular bike and did not know anything about ebikes. I really did not know what I wanted or how I would want to use the ebike. I just knew some features I thought were needed and I did not want to spend a crazy amount on it.
Now I see how much I am using it I am ok with changing it to be what I want.
Most people would just put the new controller on my current motor. Others have with decent results.
My side business is doing better than I thought it would so I ok with splurging a little on my ebike.
Do I need to swap out motor no. But I want to. Down the road I will probably add a second battery.

The weather is starting to warm up. I can get out and ride more often.
I now have over 600 miles on my bike.

I got my first flat tire the other day. luckily I was a few hundred feet from home.
I do carry a tube patch kit and a small air pump with me. but I would rather not repair it on the side of the road.

I bought some slime to put in the tires.
I ordered some Tannus tire inserts. They allow you to run flat a short distance without hurting the rim. They also help protect form getting flats.

My headset got loose I should have noticed sooner, and it messed up the bearings in the headset. I ordered replacement bearings $8 later I had two sets and I was back to riding.
It is funny as soon as I road it after replacing the bearings I was like how did not notice that sooner.

I used Loctite on the headset nut so hopefully it will not loosen again.
I now have 750 miles on my bike. The weather is better now so I should be able to get more miles on it this summer.

This was todays ride.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1621366997

Now faster times are only a little faster.
My adv time has increased. My hill speed has greatly increased.

This is the ride I do most days. It is from my house on some back roads that do not get much traffic.

pinballlooking 06-28-21 12:22 PM

812 miles on the bike. I want to do some mods to it, but the side business sucks up all my extra time.
Maybe in the winter I will get back to the bike mods. I am getting out a little more. It is so hot now I have to ride the first thing in the morning.
