Spray foam equipment
 

There are several DIY spray foam rigs on Ebay now. Here one I'm looking at: SPRAY FOAM INSULATION EQUIPMENT DO IT YOURSELF PACKAGE - eBay (item 180622023774 end time Feb-12-11 14:51:54 PST)

For the difference in price of the Tiger/Handy foam kits versus buying this equipment plus 55 gallon drums of foam means I can pay for the rig and have foam left over.

Does anyone have experience with this or similar equipment?

Are all the fittings made of solid gold?

Because, at first glance, it sure looks like they built that unit for less than $1,000 USDs..

That machine needs a pretty big air compressor to run. Have you looked into the Touch N' Seal CPDS 1000? I think it's about a third of the cost of that eBay unit.

Yeah but with the Touch 'N Seal you can't use the huge 55 Gal. drums.

Beyond an air compressor you also need heaters, if I remember correctly the setup that they used in my crawl spaces looked alot like that one on Ebay, hooked up to 55 gallon drums and they wired it in to my breaker box with a 60 amp 24 volt breaker that they brought with them, the whole setup was in it's own 16 foot long trailer, in talking to other contractors who had their own crew that just does insulation, they said that they could not justify that kind of setup because it took so long to pay for it's self and took to much training to run it correctly.

The spray rig trailers are 20K to 60K. Heated hoses and guns seem to be the items that are the majority of the cost on the small units. And Yes, Gold is right!
I'm pretty much set on using spray foam because it will be sandwiched between two layers of concrete. Pour and expand method may also be something to consider.

when my parents had their crawl space done The crew had a panel van and used the diesel engine in it to keep the tanks heated. Far from a cheap setup.

I'm thinking there are patents protecting the manufacturer from cheap knockoffs. A heated hose is nothing new and to build one does not require a doctorate in rocket science. Must be something else on the unit they have patented.

So, if you wanted to build one for yourself, from OTS parts and had your own mill and lathe, I wonder what it would cost?

I've seen a foam spay rig on This Old House, and it sure looked slow and messy.
One guy spaying and a crew moving behind him to clean up the mess.
