This is the coldest I've ever seen it around here.. (Since 1965 when I moved here)..
I think the last time Boston saw temperatures like this, was about 60 years ago.

Needless to say, our last functional Mini-spit started to malfunction, yesterday at about 16:30..

Here's the local temperature map from this morning..

It's warming up now (11:55AM), it's up to 7 deg F.. Getting great solar gain!
Should hit 10 deg at 3PM.. I can try the mini-split again..

Maybe get an hour or two of cheap heat.. :p

I guess the era of -20F mini-splits is really here..

 Sounds like a nice day to me. Enjoy!

Glad it's warming up for you shortly.

Xringer,

Your observations on New England mirror mine. I recall cold winter temps in the late 50 and 60's - up to about the 70's. Then, it started getting warmer.

How do I recall this . . .? I lived on a farm and you know it is cold when the temp IN the dairy barn was 0 F!

My mother in law still lives in Woburn and she even said it was nippy this am.

Any more news on the unit that crapped out a week ago - bad caps or bad board?

Stay warm

Steve

I wish we had your weather tonight..

Mostly in the 20s? That's perfect for my Mini-Splits.. (Well, the one that's still working)..

The temp here is going down now.. It's 7.7 deg F
and that caused the Sanyo (was running @ 10F) to go from 480W to 1.2KW just now...
I decided to turn it off for the night.. :(

As a kid, I took care of cattle on a farm in Texas.. So being cold was never a real thing. It was during a 6 year drought.. It was HOT! :o
How One Drought Changed Texas Agriculture Forever : NPR

Behind the General store, there was a creek. In the evening, as the sun was going down, we would fill up a 55 gallon drum with water to haul back to the farm.. We had two or three buckets and would park close to the water..

I can't believe that old building is still there.. Amazing..

We are keeping warm using oil and some space heaters to assist in the den.
I don't plan on working on the failed Sanyo until after we get past some more winter here..
Got snow and rain incoming this week..

It seems like the El Nino-Arctic vortex cycle is over for now..

After the weather normalizes a little, I can clean out the snow around that
Sanyo and pull the snow roof up and off..
Then I'll do some real trouble shooting. I hope it's something simple like a loose thermistor connector..

Take care!

Yeah, I think this global warming thing is going to keep on happening..
Last year, it was record-breaking and now we are doing it again..
But, this time.. It's without the super deep snow.. Almost no snow this time..
I've saved money on gasoline for the snow thrower this season..

I'm starting to think I should move to a new house with land suitable for a GSHP..
Blowing snow, with poorly executed defrost cycles and too dang cold temps aren't any fun,
when you are 70, and your bones feel like they are going on 90.. :p

Bitter cold weather, observed way out on the Cape (P town) is fascinating as the sub-freezing fog forms on the ocean. VERY impressive.

Coats all kinds of things with frozen rime.

Saw that it was zero F out at P town - warm -er than inland, but I bet the freezing fog was out there.
