Haha! It seems our cost for burning 1/2 gallon of oil per day (for DHW) is about $628.20 :eek:

Anyways, it looks like an average of about $46 a month (heat&cool) for the past year.. (At today's rates)

In 2012, I think the cooling cost will be up slightly due to the new Sanyo (Den).
Heating cost during the colder months will also be higher, now that we are heating the den.
I'll have a handle on what the total cost will be, around April..

What are the specs of the conditioned space? That is, dimensions, insulation, perhaps you have a manual J report? That would provide some context for these numbers.

We just moved into our home here, so I've yet to see a utility bill for normal usage. The months before moving in, I kept the tstat around 72F and the heat pump was probably the bulk of electrical consumption. I did have a 40gal electric water heater on, but I didn't use much hot water. The average from the meter was around 20kwh/day. That's for 1000sf floor space here in Delaware. I've got ~R20 walls and ~R40 ceiling, all cellulose. Conditioned crawl with R10, 4' walls. The floor is uninsulated..

Plus, I'm not really interested in tracking the Degree days etc..
I blog my rough data mostly for my own use. Just to nail down a basic benchmark.
Later on, if something goes wrong, or if I make some improvements
(more insulation etc) then it might be detectable..

It sounds like your Delaware dwelling has some major insulation,
so it might be a good candidate for a Mini-split ASHP.
Unless you have a low cost gas heating system already installed..

My daughter has gas heat (&DHW) and it's very cheap to run.
But, she works and uses a set-back t-stat.

My house is Sanyo heated to 20-21C 24-7.
But heating cost isn't anyway near what it would cost to run with heating oil..
If we had to use oil, it would cost us around 4 times more, and we would
be using a big setback at night, and run lower temps during the day..
And, I think we would seal up the den at night too.
If we didn't take those measures, I suspect oil cost would be 5 to 6 times
the cost of running the Sanyos..

It looks like your conditioned space is slightly larger than mine.. and I don't have a nice two car garage to work in like you ;) My ductwork does a great job of distributing air throughout the house, and temps are very consistent.. That may account for a chunk of the discrepancy.

The unit has a rated HSPF of 8.6, fairly paltry compared to the new wall-mount ratings available. I'm keeping my eye out for any multisplits with similarly high HSPF ratings for my next home.

Your system (and your home) is a work of Art.. :thumbup: Your heating cost must be peanuts..

Well, my plan is to continue designing and building homes myself. The first one worked out rather well, so after finishing the next one I may sell this and move on. It all hinges on the market I suppose. Worst case, I'll be renting one out and looking for an employer.

Thank you for the complement. I do expect the utility bills to be low, and it's very comfortable living here. Comcast finally connected the cable up the other day, so TV and internet are finally in. :)

Sounds like a plan, if you can find buyers.. Money is tight these days and lot of folks
are waiting to see who gets elected this year, before making any big investments.

Not yet, I guess.. We've got the Sanyos running again today..

Running two units, almost 24-7, plus heating the den, has made this
a pretty expensive heating season. Despite it being a mild winter.
(We are also running at 21C for 18 hours & 20C for 6 hours a day).

So, 240 kwh for heat this April, and last April was 270 kwh, (w/ one Sanyo)
I'm pleased to see we aren't using a lot more power,
since the weather for April 2011 was very close to what we had this April.
Climatological Data

One thing I've noticed this Spring.. We can leave the Sanyos set for 20 or 21C,
during mixed mild and cool weather and they will only run when needed.
The amount of kWhs saved by shutting them off completely,
(with crankcase heaters still on), is peanuts.
I always shut them off when my wife opens the windows when it gets too warm for her.. :D


Anyways, it looks like around 3,000 kWh ($490) will be used for ASHP heating during the heating season..

Compared to June's use (458kwh), we just used 290kwh (for heating) during the last billing cycle.
That's about $45.87 mo/$1.53 day. (This cost now includes heating hot water with the A7 Airtap. Installed Aug, 2 2012).

According to the local weather history, it was a little cooler last year at this time..

What month was this for? You may want to get some more attic insulation if you're spending so much energy on AC. I know you already have your windows shades in effect.
