Water meter

I have well water where I live. So, I really don't have a way of measuring how much water I've been using. I'd like to install some form of water meter. However, I'm not really aware of what kinds are out there or what to look for. Anyone have any ideas?

A lot of municipalities are switching to meters that send a wireless signal to the utility office to communicate usage for billing purposes, so there are a lot of surplus mechanical units out there. I don't think the municipality could sell you one, even if they wanted to, most governments have strict procedures in place to dispose of surplus assets. But, by the same token, most municipalities hire contractors to do this kind of work for them, that is where I would look first. They may actually own the surplus meters when they remove them, and the value may be in the scrap brass!

You could also put an amp meter on your well pump, or a ticker that times how long it is on for and figure out how many GPM it pumps.

Yeah I realize I could use a different way (measuring amps off the pump), but I'd like to know in gallons how much we're really using. I read articles about how much water people use and they just seem absurdly high, and thats probably the case. I'd just like to know how I'm compairing to the norm. I like the meters posted by Ryland. I like the fact that they're mechanical and don't require power to measure. I was hoping for something less than $100 though.

There looks to be a ton of them on Ebay.

An amp meter would allow you to do logging of your water use, but I understand wanting to know the number of gallons.

Thanks. I'll have to take a look through the ebay listing when I get home. I really would like to have some idea of how much water I'm using.
