Battery recycling (all types)
 

I'm not sure this has come up on this forum, but I know it has on ecomodder forum. I have a few extra dead lead acid batteries laying around that I'm looking to get rid of (recycle for $). So, I hopped on to Batteries Plus website to see what they'd give me for the batteries (sadly nothing). But, I did notice they also recycle almost any battery type:

So, no, its not hard to find a place to take your dead lithium or any other form of batteries.

Sadly, they wont pay you for them. Does anyone else know of any places who will?

Both Autozone and Advance Auto Parts will give you $5 of in store credit for lead acid batteries.

In my area: we typically drop off lead-acid storage batteries (including gel cell, SLA, etc.) @ local auto store chain. For other types such as regular alkaline, NiCD, NiMH, Lithium Ion, etc. we voluntarily drop them off at various electronics and big box home building centres.

Q.

My big box home improvement stores both have recycle drops for NiCd/LiOH style batteries from cordless phones to cordless tools.

For lead acid batteries, I've heard the local metal recycling centers will buy 2 per day without needing 23 forms of ID and a set of fingerprints. (The metal recyclers began requiring fingerprints to cut down on people stealing stuff and scrapping it)

Thanks, It's been helpful and I found a place to take any old batteries I might have.

Any scrap yard will pay around 15 cents now for old lead acid batteries.

Yes $0.15/lb.
A little more if you live near a population center.

Well, I am going to put this info to use. I recently retrieved a radio control airplane that I got stuck in a tree over summer. The LiPo battery is totally shot (puffed up cells), and the voltage reads near zero. I will be taking it to the store sometime this week when I have a reason to head that way.

Does anyone else know of other places to take them to recycle them?

Edit: A bit more searching shows that Radio Shack will take LiPo batteries. They aren't toxic, but do contain valuable metals that can be recycled.

It also appears Best Buy will take them, Home Depot does too, as well as Sears.

Actually, I found a very useful site that will find local places you can take stuff to recycle them! You plug in your zip code and it finds all the local places on a map, very nice.
