Rusty Maytag dishwasher racks!!
 

For some reason, Maytag didn't use rust resistant racks in this old model..
And of course replacement racks cost as much as a new dishwasher!

Anyone have any experience with this problem?

My older whirlpool dishwasher did the same thing. They are the same company so that would make sense.

I really wonder if they put the Plasti Dip coating on cheap steel racks that has burrs,
that punched holes in the coating, allowing water to get inside?

I'm likely going to end up buying a new dishwasher..

Because it last a couple years past the warranty. They want you to buy a new one.

My Bosch racks seem better but time will tell. Love the silverware on the top and it is plastic.

You're a couple of months late: yard sale season is over! Dishwashers are another of those gems most people just don't understand. Like refrigerators with bad defrost heaters, these things lurk in garages and basements everywhere. I have bought many for 20-30 bucks with little things wrong with them. None of them was old enough to have a rusted out rack. Major malfunctions were things like door switches and snap-disk thermostats. Minor fixes include springs, rubber/felt, and leaky fittings.

I would look on craigs list or bookoo or letgo for a similar model. Swap the racking out with your unit and there you go. Goodwill and the flea markets aren't good places to look, as the prices are not so attractive. Like pinball said, the various manufacturers use each others' parts, and many are the same width. Scrap the motor for half your money back, or keep the hulk for when your control board dies.

The latest of these I got was a $40 clothes dryer. Whirlpool Gold Senseon front loader whose door wouldn't stay shut. The plastic "keeper shut" clip was broken, and someone obviously used the door for a step ladder to reach a top shelf more than once. A plastic clip and some sheet metal banging later, and I have been in business with it for a couple of years. I replaced the heating element in it this year because it was taking longer than expected to dry clothes. Mama is happy with it, and the birds stay away from the vent now.

Have to decide if we are going to replace this one before "Black Friday"..
I would not like to get a used one, because I don't like the idea of
the clean up job, if it leaks.. My lathe and wooden storage cabinet
is directly below in the basement..

I recall the one that was here when we moved in in 1973.. It failed big time.. Messy..
Don't recall how old it was.. I remember it didn't clean too well..

My back has been killing me for 10 days now..
Can't even think about installing or repairing stuff. Just sitting here hurts!
Maybe I'm going to change my mind about MA legalizing weed..

I feel you on that one. I've been having a lot of problems out of the kitchen sink and dishwasher and disposer plumbing at the place we moved into this year. Called the super three times already. The fitting sandwich still leaks. Nobody in town stocks a combo fitting, I checked.

If I owned the place, I might have already paid a plumber to do it right. Can't take it with you...

Unfortunately, the 18.5yo Maytag I dragged to the curb two weeks ago suffered the same rusty rack problem. I had actually considered picking up a $35 unit from the local ReStore with good racks to replace the racks in mine, since Whirlpool/Maytags used similar racks. Ultimately, the smell of burning insulation on the main motor windings sent mine to the curb.

Several hundred dollars later, I have a beautiful 800 series Bosch in its place. We're still learning how to best arrange the dishware in this thing to make use of all three levels.

I was looking at the Bosch units at the Lowes site today..
Not sure yet of our horrible DIY re-coating of our racks is going to work..
Will know in a day or two.. And might even jump the gun on Black Friday..
