getting a new carpet. should i get new underlay for added insulation?

Hi

ive just shelled out for a new carpet. should i get new underlay as well? the old bumpy green stuff seems ok. the underlay in the carpet shop was a different material it was like recycled matt. maybe i could put new underlay on top of the old stuff and get double the insulation?

I doubt you'll get a sizable amount of insulation from ~1/4" of carpet padding. You'd be better off actually using insulation under the padding (or under the floor) if insulating is the goal. However, adding additional padding won't hurt...

You will of course get a plusher feel to the carpet, two layers is some serious comfort:eek: , toss on a blanket and have a nap:)

Any updates on the project? What did you end up doing and how has it worked out?

Sounds crazy . . but would cardboard be a good underlay ?

Not that I know anything about carpet (I don't). But I would think cardboard would get smooshed and would be kind of uneven. Its also just paper so it may break down over time. Moisture would be harsh on it as well.
