DC Wind Turbine Motors on eBay – BEWARE
This is good info to know if you're planning on putting together a wind turbine. As usual, you gotta know what you are looking for. :)

I've been watching some videos about wind power on youtube.
For some good info, check out the Fearlessthinker channel.. YouTube - ‪Fearlessthinker's Channel‬‏ |
Thee RPM rating is a important factor, the lower the rpm is of the motor the better.
I came across a huge old electric motor, it weighs 150+ lbs is rated at 500v 4000 rpm ,i am unsure of the amperage but am sure of the weight as i knocked it over and had to put it back on a lower shelf. I am going to make a cash offer for it more so a $50 offer.. Its a high rpm motor but being its so big and high voltage i think it will still work good, even at 20% |
The other day, I was using a hammer drill. Afterwards, I wanted to clean out the stone dust.
I sprayed the drill with compressed air. When the air hit the vent, it caused the drill to spin, at high RPMs, making a loud whistle noise. I wondered if the spin was was creating any voltage out of the AC plug..?. For a second, I was going to reach down and place a finger on the plug! Luckily, I decided that 90 or 200 volts might be very painful, and stopped myself.. Somethings are best left untouched.. :) |
I think you need to touch it, for testing purposes ha-ha, not !
Some turbine blades in the chuck and your in business, be it a low powered business.. |

Not much wind around here.
http://ecorenovator.org/forum/attach...1&d=1350055469 I have seen a few big wind turbines spinning here in MA, but most of the time they are stopped or moving very slowly.. |

Plenty of wind most days, X. I fly over your region every day (and right over your house sometimes). 30 to 50 feet above the trees there is enough wind. Why those turbines are not spinning always puzzles me too, but it is not a lack of wind. My guess is neighbors complaining about the noise or flickering light get the brakes turned on. Or some safety certification, maybe. |
I used to fly RC planes nearby, so I'm pretty familiar with the wind at altitude.
Google Maps I've got a lot of RC glider hours floating above this little field, and I've seen a lot of very low wind days during the warmer months of the year. My little DIY test turbine in the backyard was informative. It only turns during the middle of the winter, but due to all the trees it turns very slowly.. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...egaSpinner.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...lar/lowind.jpg I might be too close to Hanscom Field to put anything above the tree-line, even if the state was paying for the turbine. The "free" solar PV guys were here again this week. One of my wife's friends took the deal.. The system was installed in the spring, but could not be turned on, until inspection.. Last week, they finally got inspected. Missed the whole solar summer!! |

I like this at the moment - :)

I ised to use tape drive motors when I was building my 200 watt turbines, they spun at about 300/400 rpm when energized with 12 Vdc. this is ideal for a 4 ft turbine blade. A bigger diameter blade will need to be spun more slowly.
