I bought a 74 year old compressor today on Market place.

The tank ends are just under ¼” steel head .230 Shell .221 it was built 1947. The sides are almost that thick.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613012279

It has so much oil on it there is no rust on the tank.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613012279
It has a Quincy 325 pump. This pump has been made for years and more than two million sold. QR series was started 1937 and they still make the QR 325 today.
Rated 18.7cfm at 175 psi

It has a three phase motor. I may just get a single phase 5 HP motor.

I had to drive over two hours one way to get it.
It was outside Charlotte North Carolina.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613012279

I got if for $100

jeff5may 02-10-21 09:16 PM

Nice! You got a steal on that one.

pinballlooking 02-10-21 09:25 PM

Thanks, I was excited to get it. This one can be a real compressor backup to my compressor I use in the shop. It is supper close to the same output as my good compressor.

If I connect my 19 CFM and this one together sandblasting should be much better.

The guy bought it from bought the building it was in and it was no longer needed. He said it was still being used when they disconnected it.

Here it is after two car wash cycles. Their degreaser is usually decent but today is was not very good.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613071775

It is still cleaner than it was. I think I will just order a VFD and run this three-phase motor. I never tried that before but this is a very beefy motor.

The outside was supper dirty but the oil in it looks new.

Based on the (ROC number) record of change number 14 and talking to Quincy this pump was made about 1970 so the tank is older than the pump. The pump is about 51 years old.

The number after the model number is the record of change number.
That is the number to find the parts manual you need and also tells you about what year it was made.

I ordered a VFD to run the 3 phase motor. You can use the pressure switch to tell the VFD to start and stop.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613141716

The pressure switch only breaks a ground so I can use the cheap pressure switch I already bought. I will use the pressure gauge I already bought for this compressor.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613141716

I also ordered two new diaphragms for the unloaders. They wear out over time so they will need to be replaced.

I ordered a new gauge for the oil pump.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613143683

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613143683

That is all I getting until I test it out.

My VFD came in I researched it and had it setup to run the motor. The motor would not run.
I have a old 1 HP 3 phase motor connected it up to the VFD it ran fine.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613511147

I old motor resistance was good. I took it apart and it had a ton of dirt in it. The local motor repair wanted $40 to test it.
I am not going down that rabbit hole.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613512053

I found this true 5 HP single phase motor on ebay. It had a best offer. I offered $375 and they took it.
Leeson 131537.00 Electric Motor 5 HP 1725 rpm 1PH 230 VAC Single 184T Frame.

This should be a good motor for it.
It will run full power now anyway.
Same motor as this one.

Looking again at the picture. It has to be leaking oil from the seal on the pulley side.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613575528

In the manual it just shows the seal and the cover together.
The real seal had the right part number.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1616447814
This is the right seal
My intercoolers were caked solid with dirt and oil. That oil had to come from somewhere. It was not expensive so by some slim chance it is not leaking then I will have the seal on hand.

I have not had time to work on my compressor. It has been really cold here but next week it will warm up.
My new motor and magnetic starter switch and pressure switch and safety valve came in.
Still waiting on oil seal and unloader diaphragms.

So I had to at least open the inspection cover to look inside.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1613759105

This looks encouraging.

I finally have it off my trailer and on a pallet. With my subcompact tractor I could not lift it any higher on trailer. I could curl it and get it off the trailer a couple inches. I just pulled trailer out from under it. I have it bolted to the pallet my Emax came on. It has nice 4 x 4 where the legs get bolted down.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614132587

Good news. I went to drain the tank and the pipe had been cut off going into the drain.
This means it had an auto drain on it. This is good news for the tank.

Once the other compressor is done I will get my Quincy in the garage.

I was able to get top big plug out of the air tank.
This tank is 1947 and it looks amazing auto drains work.
It is just under ¼” thick this thing is so heavy.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614268602
I could not budge the bottom plug but I am done trying I have seen enough.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614268602

The drain in the bottom is 1/2" I like that.

Another home hydro test completed. 300 Psi passed with flying colors.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614295923

This time I did not start out with the tank pressurized. The pressure washer had no problem just bumping it to 300 psi. The last couple times is started out with 100 psi basically the incoming water pressure.

I am not sue if that made a difference or the switch is just working better now. Either way it was simpler to do the test when it worked as expected.

The crank case is now cleaned up. Here is a picture of almost cleaned up.
There was almost no sludge in it. The oil pump pickup screen needed cleaned up. It has fresh oil that I will use to test it.
I will drain it again and switch to Synthetic compressor oil.

I ordered this last night. It will make adjusting the belts simple. It was 39.54 shipped.

It is made for my motor frame 184T

This is what it will replace. These two bent up rails.

I cut out this Quincy unloader wrench last night. It is 1/8” plate steel hopefully that is heavy enough. If not I with cut it out of ¼”
Steel is so expensive right now so I just cut it out of some scrap I had. I cut it out handle the top part and I will weld it together. The scrap I had was not big enough to cut it out in one piece. I cut 1/8" plate every week. It has more than doubled in price.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614369272

They show the wrench being use here.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614369272

They sell the wrench for just under $200

nibs 02-26-21 05:16 PM

IMO one of the best things about it is that if and when the bottom of the tank starts getting rust pinholes you have enough material that you can weld to.
When my cheapo modern ones rust through have never been able to get them welded effectively.
Good luck with it.
Latest projects, Mortising machine is almost finished and is working well.
Panel saw works like a hot damn,
Just got a treadmill and am turning it into a belt sander, will need 20" by 120" belts.

pinballlooking 03-01-21 05:38 PM

I really can’t wait to take off the head off the compressor and see what it needs.
But I want to run it before I do this. My motor bracket comes in on Wednesday.
I looked over the weekend and the old brackets were not even close enough to test it out.
I will have to line it all up to mount the new motor bracket.

I can turn it over by hand and feel it putting out good air flow.

If you need Quincy documents you can get them here.

My motor mount came in. It fits the motor but the platform is not big enough. I will need to extend it to the pully side and back a little.
I think I will cut some ¼” plate to put under it.

https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1614830983

Here is a good pully calculator.
https://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx

My large pulley is 16” my small is 8” 5/16” motor is 1740 RPM that puts the pump right at 904 RPM.
I bought the single-phase motor with the same size shaft so I could use the original motor pully.

When it is done filling the tank. The two unloader towers are leaking air until the tank is empty.
I ordered a valve repair kit.

It looks like my compressor parts will be here Friday.

I had to file a lost package report with the post office for my bearing seal.
The bearing was shipped more than a month ago.
The post office found it and I should have it today or tomorrow.
I will still need to get belts for it.

Maybe I can match them up at a auto parts store?

I now have wiring instruction for my magnetic starter. I called the company that sold it to me. You would think they would just put instructions in the box.

Goodies arrived today. Valve rebuild kit.

Special compressor are crazy expensive. Here are two more tools I made to help take the compressor pump apart.

The big wrench I cut out of scrap and welded it together. It worked great.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1616333069

This tool was a set of socket adapters I had never used the largest on so I converted it into a tool. Then I added 3/16 and 11 gauge sandwiched together.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1616333069

Then pressure washed the head one last time with the red pressure washer tip.
Time to lap the valves.

The head cleaned up pretty nice.

Two new belts are on order. https://www.vbeltguys.com/
pretty good prices on belts and shipping. (flat rate shipping)
the belt is B67 5/8" by 70" outside. $20.75 shipped for two V belts.

That seems very fair to me.
I getting supper close to having everything I need to finish.
I need to lap the valve surfaces. Clean head mating surfaces piston top and put the head back on.

I still need to do the dreaded painting. I hate to paint.
If I had my big powder coating oven built I would just powder coat it.

I finally got the right bearing seal in on Friday and I installed it yesterday.

Last month was the best month so far for my CNC plasma business and my son is still in collage so I had do all the orders myself. I have not had much time for the compressor rebuild.

I was able to get some work done on the compressor.

I cleaned up the head gasket and top of the pistons.
I hope to work on the valves some this weekend.

All the other parts look really good.

I need a new bolt for the discharge valve and the thick platform washer. The discharge valve bolt is broken off and platform washer looks like it has seen better days.
Looks like it is time to call local Quincy dealer.

pinballlooking 04-13-21 08:55 AM

I ordered the bolt off ebay expensive for a bolt.

I called Quincy and ordered the platform washer. I priced the bolt and I should have ordered the bolt from them also for 1/3 the cost.

Next time I will check from them first and go from there.
Quincy has a Warehouse 2 hours from me so I should have the part this week.

pinballlooking 04-15-21 12:09 PM

First class mail has gotten so slow. My parts shipped Monday and still are not here.
I may still torque the head and put the other three valves in it.
This is taking to long I thought I would be using it by now.

It may have to wait for paint the way it is going. I hate to do that because it may never get painted once I put it in service.

Nine days later this is what a $25 washer looks like.
https://ecorenovator.org/forum/attac...1&d=1619100556

But I finally have the parts to put the head back together.
This was not UPS fault it was Quincy not giving the part to UPS. Then charging $22 for shipping a washer.

I could have easily cut this out but I was not entirely sure what type of steel they used for it.

At this stage it may not get paint for a while. I just need to finish it and get it in service. I will need to add the continuous run feature once I have it back up and running.
I need to order a auto drain for it.

I lot of the compressor noise comes from the air intake. My other compressor has a big box that muffles the noise. If you take an old tractor oil bath air cleaner in Mount, it to your compressor it can quiet it down a lot.
Someone on a different forum suggested doing this so I have an old Belarus tractor has a blown motor (I bought for its front end loader) and I am going to use that oil bath air cleaner to make my compressor not as loud.

Here is a picture of theirs

If you have a continuous run feature you will not be able to run oil in it.
But if you do not have that feature you can run oil in it.

I will be adding the continuous run feature so I will add some fiberglass to bottom instead of oil.
