Very cool. Is this project documented anywhere?
I am always looking at new cool projects to do with my boys.

How long have you had your printer?

jeff5may 08-06-14 07:45 PM

Have any of you heard of or had experience with the RepRap?

My son saw me reading this thread and let me know they have one at his high school. He is in a PLTW sequence entitled Pathway to Engineering. This semester, he is in Computer Integrated Mfg, and his teacher has a RepRap at his disposal. He is encouraging the kids to make their own RepRaps at home off of his (I guess you can't buy them pre-made) by learning how to run their own parts. I have no details yet, but this sounds fascinating. Why didn't they have classes like that when I was in high school?

I imagine the teacher will be sending home info flyers home soon for all of us old people to sign or pay fees or both. You know how high school is if you're a parent: any activities worth your kids' time cost extra. IMHO, the money spent will pay me back forever in one way or another.

Now you're talking about the dissatisfaction of a political system, which in name only (democracy), is designed to benefit 'the many', that has been wholly overtaken by an economic system (capitalism) which by design, quite effectively maximizes benefit for 'the few'.

You can be sure that the children of the paid-for politicians and the children of the families who finance the system that keeps the paid-for politicians in place, are all sent to excellent schools (that you have probably never heard of) where there is never any shortage of first-rate teachers, and no limit to supplies and opportunities.

To top it off, in our lower-tier 'public education' it is forbidden to discuss the existence and basis of these inequities, the topic has even been excised from the curriculum, before it ever gets printed.

I have heard of them and I think they look cool but I have no experience with them.
I went out and look at them on some web sites and it looks like a very fun project.

I suppose the first 3 wheel 3D printed car isn't really classified as a car but the Urbee rolled on October 2011. Printed in Eden Prairie, MN. I actually saw printed prototype parts from this car in person, you can do some amazing things with 3D printing.

pinballlooking 02-09-15 06:07 PM

We have been selling some of our 3 D printed items. Today 10 months since we got the printer delivered we have it made enough money to pay for the printer and the materials and enough profit to buy lunch.

We have a bunch of paid for ABS to keep printing as I buy in bulk. We are happy with this.:)

I've been printing a bunch too with a smaller UP 3d printer (4.5" sq print area). Here are a few of the things I've made. Most are car related because thats what I like to tinker on.

These are molds for 2 part urethane to make intake insulators for cars.

It really is a ton of fun to play around with this thing.

pinballlooking 03-19-15 11:10 AM

Nice looking parts, are you using ABS?

Daox 03-19-15 11:12 AM

Yeah, I haven't even tried PLA yet. Most of those applications need to hold up to some heat.

Ah yes, I almost forgot another one I've worked on a bunch. I've been making a bunch of different custom shift knobs for the guys on EcoModder.

Here is one with 3 different buttons on it that went into a 1st gen Honda Insight hybrid.

I'm currently working with another Insight owner to add a 4 way switch (ie joystick) to the same style knob.

pinballlooking 03-19-15 11:16 AM

That looks good sometimes it is hard to get a good finish on the top of those.

Daox 03-23-15 03:02 PM

Thanks.

A good and bad thing about this printer is you can't do much to tweak any settings. It has an ABS setting and a PLA setting, and that is it. You can't tweak nozzle temps, or bed temps. This makes getting started super easy, but trying out new things (and materials) quite difficult.

Daox 04-29-15 12:28 PM

Make anything new and interesting lately?

My latest is pretty boring, but functional and useful. Shifter shaft bushings to take up the slack of my old worn out ones.

No I have not been printing that much lately.
Just printing the same old stuff.

We have sold some more parts to help pay for the new aquaponics project.
I have a new work contract that has been keeping me very busy.

My bundle came with all the stuff pictured but one battery for now.

There is a handful of other stuff I will print for it.

Daox 11-04-15 09:24 AM

That certainly looks fun.

My printer currently has a bad wire connection in it. The heated bed gives an error after some undetermined amount of time. I have to take it apart and replace it with a new wire I think.

pinballlooking 11-04-15 09:30 AM

I have had to fix my bed heater wiring a couple times now. With all the movement it really takes a beaten.

I have also printed a crazy amount of ABS so far. I am on my third 6.6 pound spool.
I printed 10 2.2 pounds spools.

Daox 11-04-15 09:54 AM

Wow haha, that is a quite a bit.

Any tips for the repair?

I got some silicon coated wire for R/C planes that is very flexible so hopefully it doesn't fail again. Mcmaster has some wire called 'continuous flex' that is specifically made for robotics that I was contemplating trying.

I have printed pounds of PLA also.

It depends where yours is breaking.
Mine was breaking at a built in connector. This was put in to make it easy to change out the heater.
I fixed the connector the first time the second time I just took it out and soldered the wire together.
The thing that helped the most was the black tie in this picture it sends the stress across more of the wire.

I use Trombotine Trombone Slide Lubricant
http://www.amazon.com/Trombotine-338.../dp/B0006VWYB6
For the rails someone recommended this stuff it seems to work well.
The more printing you do the more you need to keep it lubed up.

Have any of you played with Autodesk 123D and the ability to shoot a sequence of digital photos and generate a TIN which can be output to a 3d printer file?

Daox 11-04-15 09:17 PM

Nope, sorry. That sounds quite intriguing though.

I use SolidWorks professionally, so thats what I do my design in.

I know the feeling, use what you're accustomed to. I spend most all my workdays in something Autodesk wrote: whether it's AutoCAD (vanilla, as I like to call it), AutoCAD Civil3D, or AutoCAD Electrical...

123D appears to take the college classes I had in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing to a whole new computing level, without using a calibrated camera lens. It would be interesting to take still frames out of a GoPro video circling an object and see what resolution TIN could be developed. My first trial object with 123D used a 10MP point-n-shoot and ~10 frames. I gave it a workout with a dark colored object with considerable contouring.

Daox 11-06-15 09:55 AM

That is very cool. Care to share some of the screen shots and pics of what you've done?

Wow nice to see you guys are totally into this. Yeah this 3d printing stuff is awesome. I started with an Ultimaker 2 (It's a filament based printer). Now I'm saving up for a Rova 3D Printer. I also got my invoice so I can use it as a business expense.

Form 2 3d printer is a little pricey. We desperately need the 'iPhone' of printers. That's when the real revolution will begin :)

Daox 01-23-18 05:08 PM

Well, I've had my Up! Plus printer for about 4 years now. I've made quite a few parts on it, and sold well more than enough to pay for it. But, its time to upgrade. I just ordered myself a CR-10S about a week ago. It has a print area of around 12" x 12" x 15", and able to print many more materials. My Up! Plus can print about 5" cubed. I'm really looking forward to playing with it.

pinballlooking 01-24-18 08:49 AM

Do you have a link to the one you are getting?

A while back I switched to an all metal hot end so that really allowed me to be able to print more materials.
I have been printing some PTEG lately.

Daox 01-25-18 09:00 AM

This is where I bought mine from. Ridiculously reasonable price.

Just bought a Anet A8 as my first printer from lightinthebox last month and love it. Fast shipping and great price from them.

Daox 01-26-18 07:29 AM

Nice! What kind of stuff have you been making?

I primarily use mine to make car parts.

celblazer 01-26-18 10:13 AM

Fun stuff for the family, 3D heart puzzle, lego blocks with names, Yoda shot glasses as xmas gifts and printer upgrades. Last print was a whistle that works very well. Making a save the Unicorn game this weekend for my daughter. Last week we printed nail polish shelf brackets for her. She pulled up a chair and was mesmerized watching them print. She has a million Barbie things picked out to print. LOL

Want to try a lithograph.

Printer was fun to build. Didn't take much to get it dialed in. I just switched to a glass bed and need to get the first layer dialed in.

Sounds good. I just got mine up and running about a week or so ago. I LOVE the big print bed vs my old one, and I'm already trying out new materials. I have a 16 hour print that should have just finished an hour ago in PETG. Previously I pretty much exclusively made everything in ABS.

Here was my weekend project though. The curly pieces are legs. I printed out little leaves for it later on.

http://ecorenovator.org/forum/attach...1&d=1518457712

pinballlooking 02-13-18 11:36 AM

Is this VD day printing?

I think you will like PETG I have a 6.6 pound of it right now and have been printing a lot with it lately. PETG is very strong.

Bed 70 C print head 255 C this new roll I need to adjust the head temp down a little.

Daox 02-14-18 12:08 PM

Yep. I got it all assembled the other day. It turned out pretty good. I did have a heck of a time getting superglue to stick the pieces together though. I ended up going with a jewelry glue that my wife has used to make things with. Odd since my googling on gluing PLA (thats what that is) says that superglue works great.

NiHaoMike 03-26-18 10:08 PM

Just put together my first 3D printer - a Prusa mk3 - last weekend. Now researching how to build a small HRV since it makes a bad smell when in use. (And that's just PLA, I read that ABS will stink far more...)

celblazer 03-26-18 10:38 PM

Hmm can't even smell PLA printing except for wood which smells great. :)

Some people say PLA can smell sweet from the corn/sugar plant used to make it but I never picked up any odor.

Here is the latest project. My wife loves to collect rocks and I suggested we 3d print her a rock tumbler. She liked the idea, so this is what I drew up. My father in law even had just recently given me a bag full of small gear motors which will be perfect for this application. The bearings I also have on hand from a previous project.
