roof frost

Is frost on the outside of a roof a good sign or a bad sign? lt190b

Bad, Bad. It means you'll have to scrape frost off your windshield before driving to work.

Only if you leave your car outside Pat. :)

LT, frost is just frost. If you get snow where you live, snow on your roof or melting off your roof when it's cold out, is more an indicator of whether something is wrong with your house or not...specifically the insulation in your attic.

It doesn't mean much. Your roof is at or below the frost point temperature and there is moisture in the air. Like wuck said, it's likely to happen when cars parked outside overnight are also covered in a layer of frost. That kind of frost is a pain to scrape off the car too.

It's actually a good sign- it means your roof is cold! If there's frost on your lawn and your roof is damp it means your house is losing heat. Assuming, of course, that the sun's first rays aren't shining on your shingles.

Thanks to all for the replys. Frost on the roof, an even cover no melted spots would mean little to no heat leak from the house. Correct? lt190b

There are always heat leaks, our job is to slow them down as much as possible.

If the heat leaks are severe, you see the melting, as was mentioned.

If the leaks are slower, you may not see frost melting on the roof... doesn't mean no heat is leaking.

Having a nice even frost as you described suggests that insulation has been uniformly installed.

At some point the frost will melt, which will be a good time to check the roof for uneven melting patterns.
