Tiny Homes

I noticed there has already been a blog post about tiny homes. Really small homes have always been a fascination of mine. I always seem to be looking through small home books at the bookstore. I think around 300sq ft would be a good fit for me.

Those houses are amazing. I like the small houses because they force you to use the space well. A lot of big houses have plenty of space but don't use it well. 300sq ft is really tiny - smaller than our 2 car garage. I don't think I could do it. If I were going to though, I would design the interior like a boat with lots of storage under the beds and a desk that folds out of the wall.

Where would you put your bike!? That's one of the things that stops me from fantasizing.

You would just have to come up with some clever system to store your bike. Maybe a Bike Garage outside . . . .

I was thinking you could hang it on the wall, frame it, and call it kinetic sculpture.

I wish i could pull that off. my living room is larger than 300sqft. My garage is more like 600-800.

Not enough walls for 4 bikes, sadly, :). Mehbe I could make a tiny garage, as was suggested.

For some great concepts in small design, watch the opening scene in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS.

It's Gene Kelly getting out of bed in the morning in his TINY apartment. He sort of 'dances" his way through getting dressed and ready for the day as the apartment changes from sleeping to waking mode, including sliding the bed up to the ceiling, and a table that pops out of the closet!

Worth Watching!

Small House Interest...

The Small House concept seems to be gathering some speed.

I did just a brief bit of internet searching on the topic and was well rewarded.

I didn't see this link on very high on that list, but from time to time, there are some very dedicated small house people with very interesting insights who post there. It's worthwhile to join the group and look at the photo section there.

And here are some links to Livingston Taylor's (James Taylor's brother) small house. I really like this photo, and how the story is not the house, but the world around it. A bit like reality, I think...

If someone is going to live on 300-600sq.ft, then an apartment would be more energy efficient: less exposed walls/ceiling, less real estate per capita, etc.

Re bicycle: my Step-Dad hangs his on two hooks in the ceiling.
