Squeekfoam

What's in a name?

In dutch the common name for this material is "piepschuim", which literally translates to squeakfoam (piepen == to squeak. schuim == foam). If you rub two blocks of it against eachother it squeaks, hence the name, we all did this when we were kids.

The common name is so common that in a DIY-store, or wherever, it's better to ask where the squeakfoam is than ask for polystyrene-plates.

Polystyrene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is a versatile material, it's main uses are insulation and packaging. Here in the Netherlands it's also important for building roads. Especially it is used where roads connect to bridges and such. It is used as foundation material since it is lighter than a high bed of sand. Especially in the western part of the Netherlands the soil is mostly water and sand and therefore not very solid, there is no bedrock (actually there is, but it is some 200m (650 feet) below groundlevel), to keep things stable and on the same level over time the weight of higher parts of roads is compensated by using this light material.
