That's cool. I am currently trying to grow potatoes in their tomato planter. The plants are really healthy but that wooden box looks even better.

My uncle did something similar when I was a kid. He used old tires filled with dirt rather than building a frame. It worked but he got hundreds of really small potatoes.

A few things I can think of that might have caused this:

Not enough nutrients/water in the soil.
Too much plant coverage when making the next layer.
Too cold climate/season.

Maybe other things too.
