The spring loaded check valves work pretty well. The ones without a rubber seal are cheaper than the ones with the seal. Easy peasy breezy. Any orientation installation for quick and simple.

PEX wouldn't work so great, copper would be fine. plenty of old oil fired systems used those without issue (well, until they caked up with minerals). it's all about rate of heat transfer.

Just about all the systems that I've seen that actually work well use the second method you describe. Small e-tube collector loop volume, exchanging heat into a larger tank, usually insulated well.

EDIT: Now it works. The hot air collector looks like it would work really well on a trailer or home with a package unit heater. It would tie right in.

Yes, that won't be an issue.
The heat exchanger is metal, and Solar will not flow into that unless Geo is flowing as well. The earth won't ever get to a temperature to cause that type of failure.
