I have no idea. It wasn't marked, but it was 20 years old. Based on the new unit's 16-SEER rating and the ~33% HVAC savings, I'm guessing it was a 10.

Sounds a little high. I paid the installer about 7k last year for my 4 ton 16 SEER system. (heat pump heater, no gas) It was a complete new system including new wire from the breaker.

Do you plan to use it for many years? I'd buy new and choose a highly efficient unit. If you use it for the full lifespan, the added cost of new manufacture is minimal compared to buying two used...

It depends a lot on the system. My old central heat pump could handle freezing but not much lower. The new central heat pump is good at least to 25F, the coldest we've had this year.
