I saw this and thought it was cool. Not much too it, but looks neat.

That looks cool, but the only thing I don't like about it is that cement leaches water. So you'd have to end up watering your plants a lot more.

I think thats why its for succulent plants. They don't need to be watered as often, right?

To reduce the amount of water loss the holes could be lined with plastic shopping bags, milk jugs, left over paint. That way the cement will have some kind of barrier between it and the dirt also it can keep some junk from going to the land fill.

the amount of dirt that each hole will hold is going to be small so it will dry quickly no matter what. succulents and maybe some of the dryer herbs would be ok but in most climates that will use a ton of water for anything else.

that's really neat!

droopy succulents like elephant food and string of bananas would do well with that i think. i wonder how dragon fruit would adapt to it. the top blocks could be occupied by some columnar cacti.

the back of our house faces west and i'm trying to figure out what to do for it--filing this in idea bank for sure.

I had a wall similar to this one. Wouldn't grow anything other than weeds.
Water it in the morning and it would be bone dry by noon. (this is in the south)
Lining the holes with plastic may help though.

i am trying a modified mini-version of this now to see how it goes. i put some ocotillo branches in one block and elephant food in another. the ocotillo aren't rooted yet so it may take a while before i know if it works or not.

thanks for the heads up--i'm going to start another tester with plastic bags and see if one works better than the other.
